[Review Sách] The Railway Children

“Dear Mr (we do not know your name)
Mother is ill and the doctor says we must give her these things at the end of the letter, but we haven’t got enough money to get them. We do not know anybody here except you, because Father is away and we do not know his address. Father will pay you, or if he has lost all his money, Peter will pay you when he is a man. We promise it.”
– The Railway Children –

It’s about three kids Roberto, Peter and Phyllis. Because their father was away, their mother said, their family had to leave house in London and moved to the country where has a white house near the railway station. Everyday, they went along the fence near the top of the hill and waved to passenger in the train. That way would send their love to London where father lived, they thought.
They were poor, mother said. They were not allowed to fire in winter because the coal were expensive. And when their mother was ill, they did not have enough money to buy what the doctor said. And they wrote a letter to the only person they know here, an old man in the train who waved to them. This is the best part of the story that i like most. There’s something like a soft pain twisted in my stomach.

It reminds me of a Vietnamese novel – The Two Kids by Thach Lam. But the difference is The Two Kids has an open ending. We don’t know what will happen with them in the future. I feel hurt because of their life or maybe my life. Like the lights in the train, passing quickly in the dark night.

However, stars can’t shine without darkness. I always believe I’m a star. A star in the dark night, waiting for shining. ⭐
